I have managed to get USB devices working by allowing the automatic install to fail, then using device manager to manually install the driver and pointing to the system32/driverstore folder, i did this for a memory stick then windows failed to install the generic disk driver, used the same process to manually install the driver. I am wondering if this is related to driver signing rather than the actual drivers, when you install manually through device manager you are prompted with a warning that the driver may be unsafe, but you are able to continue using the driver by ignoring the error (clicking to continue anyway), whereas the automated driver install does not prompt you.
